Helping the Helpless
“By grace are you saved though faith…and not of yourselves... it is the gift of God” Eph. 2:8-9
When living in San Augustine, Texas in the sixties, my friend Hollis Peavy called me to help him and his brother Willis get a cow out of the creek. Trixie was bogged knee deep in the quicksand of Patroon Creek and unable to free herself. We finally pulled her out with rope and a hand winch fastened to a nearby tree. “I’ve seen this before”, Hollis said, “and aint nothing as helpless as a helpless cow.”
When I recall that day at the creek, I think of the oft-quoted “scripture”, “God helps those who help themselves.” Like many old adages, this one contains some Bible truth, but is not a scripture. Some believe they can get to heaven by helping God get them there.
The only thing man must do to reach heaven is to believe God can pull him from his sin and lets Him do it. Then we live for Him…not so He’ll pull us out of the quicksand, but because He already has! Man’s escape from the quicksand of sin is not the result of “God helping those who help themselves”… but a case of God helping those who can’t help themselves.”
